The University

Founded in 1869 as the state's second teachers college, Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC or SIU Carbondale) is a comprehensive four-year, public research university. The Carbondale location serves as the Southern Illinois University System's flagship campus. In 2015, SIU Carbondale was one of only 47 first-time public university recipients of the prestigious community engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. In the fall of 2020, SIUC welcomed 11,366 students, including 1,361 first-time undergraduate students.

Southern Illinois University Carbondale is situated less than one mile from the city's downtown. The main campus encompasses more than 1,136 acres, comprising 245 facilities that boast 7.2 million square feet of building space combined. The crown jewel of the campus is its beautiful 40-acre, spring-fed Campus Lake. The university's College of Agricultural Sciences maintains a 2,159-acre working farm and forest system called University Farms, which serves as a major research and education laboratory.

SIU Carbondale received a total of 6,165 first-time undergraduate student applications for the fall 2020 semester, of which 1,361 enrolled at the start of the academic year, equating to a 31.2% increase from one year prior. The university boasts a significant out-of-state student population, which represents over 28% of its current student body. In addition, SIUC welcomed 1,284 transfer students to its campus in fall 2020.

SIU Carbondale offers a variety of university-operated housing facilities with a total capacity of approximately 4,000, leaving more than 7,360 students in need of off-campus housing options.
